FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is an autoclave?
An autoclave is a device used to sterilise equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high-pressure steam at a temperature of approx. 121°C.
This process kills bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores making it essential for maintaining a sterile environment in the Beauty, Dental, Laboratory, Medical, Piercing, Tattoo and Veterinary settings.
How does an Autoclave work?
An autoclave operates by sealing its chamber and then introducing steam under pressure. The high pressure allows the steam to reach higher temperatures than boiling water, effectively killing microorganisms.
The steam penetrates materials and destroys contaminants through a combination of heat and moisture.
How long does an autoclave take to sterilise?
The duration of an autoclave cycle varies depending on the load and type of items being sterilised. Typically, a cycle lasts between 15 to 60 minutes.
This includes the time needed for the autoclave to reach the required temperature, maintain it for a specified duration and then cool down.
What items can be sterilised in an Autoclave?
Common items that can be sterilised in an autoclave include medical and dental instruments, laboratory glassware, certain plastics and textiles such as surgical drapes and gowns.
However, not all materials are suitable; heat-sensitive or moisture sensitive items may be damaged by the process.
Why autoclaving is the best method of sterilisation?
Autoclaves are highly effective for sterilisation due to their ability to destroy a broad range of microorganisms, including resistant bacterial spores, through high-pressure steam.
They ensure reliable and consistent results with standardised procedures and effective steam penetration which covers all parts of the load, including porous materials.
Compared to other methods, Autoclaves are safer as they use steam and pressure, avoiding harmful chemical residues. Their versatility allows them to handle various materials, and they are efficient with quick sterilisation cycles and low operating costs.
Additionally, autoclaves meet regulatory standards and offer automated controls and documentation, making them a preferred choice in healthcare, beauty and industrial applications.
